Living with Atopic Dermatitis

What everyday situations are most troublesome for people living with atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease and people living with the more severe forms often suffer from intense itching, dry bleeding skin with cracks, along with an increased risk of skin infections. Many people with atopic dermatitis also suffer from other atopic diseases, such as asthma.

We asked people living with atopic dermatitis which everyday situations bother them the most because of their disease. Almost 4,000 people across the Nordic region responded!

The everyday situation that was voted the most disturbing was using creams and emollients several times a day, which takes a lot of time and makes it uncomfortable to get dressed because of the stickiness. This is an aspect of living with atopic dermatitis that many people may not think about, but clearly has a huge impact on the everyday lives of people living with the disease.

The second highest ranked everyday situation was not being able to perform daily activities due to poor sleep. Why do people with atopic dermatitis sleep poorly? The intense and persistent itching, often described as having thousands of mosquito bites, can have a very bad impact on sleep quality. The third highest ranked everyday situation was refusing to participate in social activities because of the appearance of the rash, which affects self-esteem.Visible rashes on the face, hands or other exposed areas often make people living with atopic dermatitis feel uncomfortable in public because of how they look. For World Atopic Dermatitis Day on September 14, we want to raise awareness of this relatively common and debilitating disease.Based on the survey results, we've created short video clips of the everyday situations that received the most votes, which will be shown on social media throughout September. Our call to action is simple: If you live with atopic dermatitis and find that these everyday situations are having a bad impact on your life - get help from a healthcare professional to take control of your disease!

The videos will be broadcast on social media throughout the month of September and will link to our ADCT test:Test your eczema | Atopiker.no from Sanofi Genzyme
